Sold-out ‘Taste of Ireland’ Celebration at the Cape Cod Irish Village a Success!

Sister Lena Deevy speaking at 'Taste of Ireland'On very few days in the middle of winter will one witness people flocking to the vacation spot of Cape Cod. February 21st was one of these days. The ‘Taste of Ireland’ at the Cape Cod Irish Village brought in many friends of the Irish Immigration Center to eat, dance, and support a great cause.

"It was the largest crowd that we’ve had for the event. The music and food was exceptional,” said John Rattigan of the Irish Immigration Center.

Guests sampled food from a number of local restaurants and enjoyed traditional Irish music. Young folks spent the afternoon painting their faces and making a variety of crafts. There was also a great turnout to the IIC’s free Immigration and Citizenship Workshop where experienced legal staff offered their expert advice to Cape Cod immigrants from all nations.

“The Cape Cod business community was so supportive, the event was packed. We had Cape Cod hopping in February, which is great,” said Cathleen Morrison, IIC board member. “A special thanks goes out to Jack Hynes, the owner of the Cape Cod Irish Village, who is fabulous to the organization.”

This year Doyle’s Restaurant won the Taste of Ireland competition, ending the fifteen year winning streak of Captain Parkers. If you would like to sample Doyle’s, head on out to 1329 Rte. 28 in South Yarmouth. Guests also sampled great food from Cape Cod Irish Village, The Skipper, and Irish Butcher Shop Market in addition to Captain Parkers and Doyle’s.

The Irish Immigration Center would like to thank the Cape Cod Irish Village, The Sons of Erin, St. Pat’s Parade Committee, and the restaurants and businesses who supported the event. A great time was had by all.

SOLD-OUT SOLAS 2009 CELEBRATES IIC 20th ANNIVERSARY

President of Ireland and 960 Guests Mark 20 Years of IIC

“I’m surprised at how many people I know here,” said Tom Lee, during the afterparty of his first Irish Immigration Center Solas Awards. It was a sentiment shared by many of the 960 guests who reconnected with friends of years and locations past.on a memorable Wednesday night.

Nearly 1000 local folk from Boston's Irish Community crammed the ballroom of the Westin Copy Hotel to celebrate twenty years of IIC and to enjoy a dinner fit for a President.

The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese was the 2009 Solas recipient and honored guest. Living her to billing as an eloquent and moving orator, she delivered a keynote address that was alternately funny, emotional, personal and powerful. Taking the theme of “Two shortens the Road,” an old Irish saying meaning that a journey is a lot shorter when it’s shared, and the notion of “moving along a bit and making room for someone else,” she spoke as though addressing everyone individually, and delivered a message that resonated with immigrant and native alike.
